Electric Revolution: Toyota Debuts Innova EV Concept in Indonesia

Electric Revolution : The ongoing Indonesia International Motor Show played host to a surprise reveal from Toyota in the form of the Innova EV concept. Toyota refers to the Kijang Innova EV (Innova Crysta in India speak) as a study in “modernity and heritage combined” mixing a far olde running brand name with a contemporary EV powertrain. Outside the cosmetic updates clearly visible on the body and interior details are revealed with respect to the battery or powertrain under the body.dynamic

To differentiate the EV, there are blue highlights and detailing

The front grille is the most obvious transformation on the concept and it has been sealed off with a body-coloured piece with a narrow slit at the bottom and a chrome bar running between the headlamps merging at the central Toyota logo. The EV also gets a series of blue highlights, including in the Toyota logo — a touch on all electrified Toyotas — in the headlamps and taillights and in the body decals on the sides. There are EV badges on the fender, and an ‘Electric’ badge at the tailgate. Charging socket located behind charging flap on side, Battery info also displayed at centre console, tubular instrument cluster with tachometer.

The cabin is largely unchanged from the regular model, the only real change being a gear selector replaced by a selection of buttons on the centre console. One interesting detail to note is that the concept had a traditional RPM gauge in the instrument cluster next to the speedometer. The central touchscreen meanwhile appears to include other pertinent info like the battery charge status and so on.

Toyota currently hasn’t provided any information on the Innova EV’s running gear or its plans of putting it into production. A completely new Innova is being developed, which will introduce a hybrid powertrain in certain markets. However, it will be interesting to see if Toyota goes a step further and offers the next-gen car with an all-electric powertrain in addition to the petrol, diesel and hybrid options.
