Drive Green & Save Big : It took car manufacturers a little while to electrify their seven-seat lines, although better late than never. Within the Nissan range, seven-seat means choosing the X-Trail SUV, and wouldn’t you know, it too comes in e-Power hybrid guise.In Tekna trim, you’d normally expect to pay over £46,000 for such a car, but in the Auto Express spring sale, that same car can be yours for a little over £41,500 instead — meaning a saving of over £5,000 off the recommended retail price.
The exact sum being £5,060, bringing the aggregate number down to £41,540, for a new generation X-Trail e-Power Tekna, powered by one of Nissan’s intelligent 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol hybrid drivelines. Not just e-Power, either, e-4ORCE, which means that this one’s also four-wheel drive — an awkward enough designation that you’ll probably just tell friends to look for “the 4×4 one”.
The most powerful engine available in the X-Trail, it pushes out 210bhp and will launch you from 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds. It gets its own electric motor on the rear axle, meaning it can cut in quite rapidly if you happen to be low on traction, and we’ve found the e-Power setup overall to do a pretty good job of blending petrol and electric drive for a smooth experience.
It also says it’s good for 44.8mpg combined, which doesn’t sound like much these days but isn’t bad at all for a car of the X-Trail’s size, and presuming you spend a fair bit of time in town, electric running should help boost that figure too. Tekna trim, meanwhile, is the third step up out of five in the range, and comes with kit such as 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, tri-zone air conditioning, a glass roof, heated front and second-row seats, and a head-up display as standard. Not a bad return for just over £41,000.
