MG Windsor EV Owners Face Charging Shake-Up : JSW MG Motor India has revised its terms for the free fast-charger offer given to such MG Windsor EV buyers who had purchased the car on or before December 31, 2024. According to the revised document, an upper limit of 1,000 units is now being imposed on the owners of the above-mentioned vehicles, who were earlier allowed to charge without an upper limit. The newly
introduced terms and conditions would take effect on February 7, 2025.Before the update, the terms and conditions included that ‘there could be limitations or restrictions’ on how many useable units could be obtained, but they did not specify a limit. The original T&Cs also stated that MG reserved the right to terminate or revise the offer at any time without notice.
MG Motor India also clarified to car&bike that the previous usage of fast chargers by owners will not be subtracted from the 1,000 unit balance, which will be applicable for early owners going forward. The updated policy was aimed at limiting abuse of free charging, which the company had offered to early purchasers, the company said. The new measures were also meant to
extend the vehicle’s battery life by lessening the need for fast chargers. Battery degradation due to high usage of AC DC fast charging is also worse than normal AC charging. “MG is committed to enabling as many people as possible to enjoy EV ownership, and has led a number of initiatives to this end, with the recent free home charger offer, expanding the number of
public and community chargers, developing a unified charging platform and, for a limited time, free public charging for MG Windsor EV customers. However, given growing cases of usage that exceeds our fair usage policy and also poses a risk to the auto battery’s health due to non-recommended charging practices, we are putting in place a new limit on public charging usage. “This update ensures we can continue to provide charging on a fair use basis, preventing abuse and ensuring all MG Windsor EV owners can charge fairly and evenly, enhancing the overall charging experience,” the company said in a statement.
It also instructed owners to consult their vehicle’s owner’s manual ‘for best practices related to battery health and longevity, including mindful use of DC fast charging.’With a battery pack of 38 kWh, the new complimentary fast charging would allow owners to fast charge from 0 to 100 per cent close to 26 times during the first year of ownership. With that in mind, and a real world range of 300 km on full charge, users could potentially do up to 7,800 km for free.
