Tata Motors & Mahindra Face Off : Tata Motors and Mahindra have been in a tussle for supremacy in India’s automobile sector. In January, Mahindra overtook Tata Motors in monthly sales, riling up the rivalry. The sales data for February is now out, and it sheds some light on this increasingly intense competition. Hyundai is far behind with Maruti Suzuki still leading when it comes to car sales. In February, Maruti Suzuki sold about 1.60 lakh vehicles, continuing to hold the top spot in the Indian car market. This number makes it far ahead of sector second-place Hyundai, which is roughly behind by around 1 lakh cars. The gap that other manufacturers have to close is still very
large.”Now the battle turns to the close race between Tata Motors and Mahindra for the #3 position in cars. Tata Motors has at times edged past Hyundai to claim the second spot in previous years. However, one significant development occurred in January 2025, when Mahindra backed higher and Tata Motors settled down for the fourth position.
Tata Motors sold 46,811 cars in February down from 51,321 units in February 2024. At the same time, Mahindra’s sales for the month totalled 50,420 vehicles, a growth of 18.91% compared to February 2022, when it sold 42,401 cars.Mahindra registering 50,000 plus units for two months in a row also shows their increasing presence in the market. Their recent performance has helped them with Tata Motors’s recent success. The consumer preference has shifted towards Mahindra.
Since October 2023, there has been a decline in sales of electric vehicles for Tata Motors. This, along with Mahindra now springing right behind, has had a significant impact on their overall performance. Consumers have started to look at Mahindra as the second-best option, as compared to Tata Motors.
